CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS by
RICHARD BAXTER

step 6
This stage simply involves the blocking in of flat 2D underpainting, though in some areas like the building I have kept the paint thin, then used rags and fingers to imprint texture in the paint. After blocking in these basic areas, they are left to dry before adding layers and glazes over the top, to gradually build up form and lighting effects. I've also begun to develop the sky a little. As I work on different areas, it becomes apparent that other areas are lacking, and so each progression leads to an awareness of the next step, bit by bit. Often there are many parts that could be worked on in a painting, but one part will call the loudest, probably because I can feel its solution the strongest. I usually do these parts first unless it's not technically possible, because the strength of their realisation, is the catalyst for further developments in weaker areas.
