CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS by

step 11
In some areas where the paint was applied thickly, the grain of the canvas becomes lost. Sandpaper is used here to restore it. This has a number of uses. It can be used for drawing and modelling on its own, as it lightens areas like chalk. As it restores the grainy look, this can be used as a base texture for glazes, which sometimes benefit from the stippled white dots shining through like tiny white stars. The viewer may not consciously register this effect, but unconsciously the overall effect is one of greater visual richness and vibration.
