'am I dead?'
Is it possible to be dead? If you are dead, then you cannot 'be' anything. You can't even 'not exist' anymore. There is only existence. Why is this? Because the idea of 'you' as separate to the world is an illusion in the first place. I once had a dream where I was attending my own funeral. My mother was there, and I asked her "am I dead?" She turned from the 'dead' me, to the 'alive' me, and asked "do you feel dead?" I answered no, then turned away from the funeral to walk along a dirt road, filled with the joy of knowing there is no death.
